A notice of deficiency is a letter sent by a corporate name examiner to an applicant of a federal corporation after their proposed name has been rejected. The reason for the rejection is typically explained in the notice, however, it can always be clarified further by contacting Industry Canada directly. Reasons for this rejection notice may include: conflicts with an already-registered corporation, the proposed name lacks a distinctive or descriptive element, the proposed name contains a word that is not allowed to be used when incorporating, and so on. Registering a name for a federal corporation can be tricky as it needs to not conflict with other companies registered across several jurisdictions, and as such, notices of deficiency are quite commonly received during the name reservation process.
